Understanding Yarn Twist (TPI) and Why It Matters

18 June 2026 by

Twist is one of the most important — and overlooked — yarn properties. It affects strength, softness and how a fabric behaves.

What is twist?

Twist is the number of turns per inch (TPI) given to a yarn during spinning. It binds the fibres together so the yarn holds as a continuous strand.

How twist affects the yarn

  • More twist — stronger, firmer, more durable yarn; used for weaving warps and sewing threads.
  • Less twist — softer, bulkier, more absorbent yarn; used for knitting and towel pile.

S-twist and Z-twist

Twist direction is described as S or Z depending on which way the fibres spiral. It matters when plying yarns and for certain fabric effects.

Balancing twist

Too little twist makes a weak yarn; too much makes it harsh and lively (prone to snarling). The right level depends on the end use.

What to specify

For most orders the supplier sets an appropriate twist for the count and use; specify it only if your fabric has a particular requirement.
