India’s cotton position, in current numbers
We trade yarn and fabric in the largest cotton-growing country in the world. These are the published figures behind that.
India ranks first globally in cotton acreage, with 114.84 lakh hectares under the crop — about 38% of the world’s cotton area — and second in both production and consumption. It is the only country cultivating all four recognised cotton species.
The 2025-26 crop was 290.91 lakh bales (4.95 million tonnes) provisional, while domestic consumption reached 328 lakh bales (5.58 million tonnes). India’s spinning sector — the second largest in the world at roughly 50 million spindles across 1,943 mills — turns that crop into over 3,400 million kg of cotton yarn a year.
