Yarn Length Calculator

Work out the total length of yarn from its count and weight — and metres per kilogram.

Metres per kg ≈ Ne × 1693.4 (English cotton system). Total length = metres per kg × weight.

Length from weight and count

Count is defined by a length-to-weight relationship, so once you know the count you can convert any weight into a length. For English cotton count, one Ne equals 840 yards per pound.

So length in yards = count × 840 × weight in pounds. In metric terms, length in metres = Nm × weight in kilograms × 1,000.

How much yarn is in a kilogram

A single kilogram of 40s cotton contains almost 68 kilometres of yarn. That is worth remembering when someone questions why a small weight difference matters on a fine count.

Worked example

You have 2.5 kg of 30s Ne on a cone. Length = 50,790 × 2.5 = 126,975 metres, or roughly 127 km.

If a knitting machine consumes 8 metres per second, that cone runs for about 4 hours 25 minutes — the kind of figure that matters for shift planning.

Frequently asked questions

How many metres of yarn in one kilogram?

It depends on count. A 30s Ne cotton gives about 50,790 metres per kilogram; a 40s gives 67,720.

How do I calculate yarn length from weight?

Multiply count by 840 by weight in pounds for yards, or multiply Nm by kilograms by 1,000 for metres.

How much yarn is on a standard cone?

Commonly 1.89 to 2.5 kg. At 30s Ne, a 1.89 kg cone holds roughly 96 kilometres of yarn.

Does length per kilogram change with blend?

The count relationship holds regardless of fibre, but blends of the same nominal count can vary slightly in actual linear density.

Can you supply a specific cone length?

We supply by weight, which is the trade standard. Tell us the count and cone weight you need and we will confirm the length it works out to.
