Weight units in the yarn trade

Yarn is bought by weight and sold by weight, so unit errors here cost money directly. Indian mills price per kilogram. US and some export contracts use pounds. Bales and cartons add another layer.

One kilogram is 2.2046 pounds. One pound is 0.4536 kilograms. A standard Indian cotton bale is nominally 170 kg, though actual bale weights vary and should always be confirmed on the contract.

A caution on conditioned weight

Yarn is hygroscopic — it gains and loses moisture with the atmosphere. Cotton at 8.5 per cent moisture regain weighs measurably more than bone-dry cotton. Contracts normally specify conditioned weight for exactly this reason.

If you are reconciling a delivered weight against an invoice and find a small discrepancy, moisture is usually the explanation before anything else. Our conditioned weight calculator handles that adjustment.

Frequently asked questions

How many pounds in a kilogram?

One kilogram is 2.2046 pounds. To convert kilograms to pounds, multiply by 2.2046.

What is the weight of a cotton bale in India?

An Indian cotton bale is nominally 170 kg, but actual weights vary. Always confirm the bale weight on the contract.

Why does yarn weight change in storage?

Yarn absorbs and releases atmospheric moisture. Cotton at standard 8.5 per cent regain weighs more than dry yarn, which is why contracts specify conditioned weight.

How do I convert grams per cone to kilograms per carton?

Multiply cone weight in grams by cones per carton, then divide by 1,000. Our cone and carton estimator does this automatically.

Do you price yarn per kilogram?

Yes, ex-Delhi and per kilogram, exclusive of GST and freight unless we state otherwise on the quote.
