Why length units still cause disputes

Indian mills quote fabric in metres, US buyers in yards, and older Indian trade still uses gaz. A one metre error on a 5,000 metre order is trivial; a unit mix-up on the same order is not.

The conversions are fixed: 1 metre = 1.0936 yards, 1 yard = 0.9144 metres, 1 inch = 2.54 cm. The gaz used in Indian textile trade is normally taken as 0.9144 m, the same as a yard, though regional usage varies — always confirm.

Worked example

An export order is placed for 10,000 yards. In metres that is 10,000 × 0.9144 = 9,144 metres. If you costed the order at 10,000 metres you would have over-supplied by 856 metres — nearly 9 per cent.

On fabric width, a 58 inch loom width is 58 × 2.54 = 147.3 cm. Mills usually round this to 147 cm on the spec sheet.
