Textile fibres absorb moisture from the air. The amount they hold varies with humidity, so the same lot of yarn genuinely weighs more on a damp day than a dry one. Trading on raw weight would let either side gain from the weather.
The industry solution is conditioned weight: the weight the yarn would have at an agreed standard moisture regain. Contracts specify it, and disputes over delivered weight usually resolve to a moisture question.
Standard moisture regain by fibre
Note how little polyester holds. That is why blend weight adjustments are dominated by the natural fibre content — a PC 65/35 moves far less than pure cotton.

Worked example
A cotton lot is weighed at 1,020 kg with an actual regain of 10 per cent. Oven-dry weight is 1,020 ÷ 1.10 = 927.3 kg. At the standard 8.5 per cent regain, conditioned weight is 927.3 × 1.085 = 1,006 kg.
So although the scale read 1,020 kg, the invoiceable weight is 1,006 kg — a 14 kg difference that matters on a priced contract.
