Buyer’s Guide
The complete guide to buying yarn
Seven steps from a first idea to yarn on your floor — count, fibre, spinning, quality, construction, costing and ordering, with the tools to do each.
Choose the yarn count
Count sets a yarn’s fineness, and with it the fabric’s weight, hand and price. Higher Ne = finer yarn. Start here, then convert between systems as needed.

Pick the fibre or blend
Cotton for comfort, polyester for durability, viscose/modal for drape, and blends (PC, PV, CVC) to balance cost and performance. Match the fibre to your end use and market.

Match the spinning system
Ring-spun for finer, stronger, smoother yarn; open-end for economical coarse yarn; combed for premium, carded for value. This decides hand-feel and price at your count.

Set your quality parameters
For anything critical, specify strength and evenness, not just count. CSP indicates single-yarn strength; CV% and IPI describe evenness and imperfections. Consistent values batch to batch are the real quality signal.

Nail the construction
For wovens, count works with EPI/PPI, reed and cover factor to set weight and firmness; for knits, GSM and gauge lead. Get the construction right on paper first.

Size and cost the order
Convert your fabric plan into yarn quantity (with wastage), then into cones, cartons and landed cost — before you commit. Allow for shrinkage if finished dimensions are fixed.

Sample, order and receive
Evaluate a sample or development lot, confirm the spec, then order. Yarn ships on cones in cartons, mill-direct with tracking. Store it cool, dry and covered.

Frequently asked questions
How do I choose the right yarn count?
Match count to your fabric and end use - finer counts (higher Ne) for lighter, softer fabric; coarser for robust, heavier fabric. Use our count converter and choosing-count guide.
What quality parameters should I specify?
Beyond count, specify strength (CSP), evenness (CV%) and imperfections (IPI) for critical fabric, and ask for consistency batch to batch.
How much yarn do I need for an order?
Start from fabric weight (GSM x area), add wastage, then convert to cones and cartons. Our yarn requirement and cone/carton tools do this.
Can I get a sample before ordering?
Yes - request a yarn, shade or fabric sample or a small development lot to evaluate before bulk.
