Blend Cost Calculator
Work out the weighted cost per kg of a blend from each fibre’s percentage and rate.
Blended cost = Σ(percentage × rate) ÷ 100. Add wastage, conversion cost and GST separately for a landed cost.

Blend cost is a weighted average of the component fibre prices, plus conversion cost. The fibre element is straightforward arithmetic; the conversion element is where quotes diverge.
Conversion covers blowroom through to packing: waste, power, labour, depreciation and margin. It varies with count, spin type and mill efficiency. Finer counts and combed yarn cost more to convert.
What sits on top of fibre cost
| Element | Typical share of price | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Raw fibre | 55 – 70% | The dominant driver; moves with the cotton market |
| Spinning conversion | 20 – 30% | Higher for combed, compact and fine counts |
| Waste and realisation | 3 – 8% | Combed yarn loses 15 to 20% in combing |
| Packing and freight | 2 – 5% | Cones, cartons, pallets, transport |
| Margin | 3 – 8% | Varies with volume and relationship |
The realisation trap
Combed yarn is not simply carded yarn plus a combing charge. Combing removes 15 to 20 per cent of the fibre as noil, so a kilogram of combed yarn needs roughly 1.2 kg of cotton input before you count spinning waste.
That is why combed yarn carries a premium well above the visible processing cost, and why the premium widens when raw cotton is expensive.
Worked example
A PC 65/35 at polyester Rs 95 and cotton Rs 190 gives a fibre cost of Rs 128 per kg. If conversion for a 30s carded PC runs at Rs 55 per kg, the ex-mill cost is about Rs 183 per kg before packing and margin.
Switch to combed cotton in the blend and both the cotton input and the conversion rise — typically adding Rs 20 to 35 per kg at this count.
Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate the cost of a blended yarn?
Take the weighted average of the fibre prices by ratio, then add spinning conversion, waste, packing and margin. Fibre is normally 55 to 70 per cent of the final price.
Why is combed yarn so much more expensive than carded?
Combing removes 15 to 20 per cent of the fibre as noil, so more raw cotton is needed per kilogram of yarn, on top of the extra processing.
What is conversion cost in spinning?
Everything between fibre and finished cone: waste, power, labour, depreciation and margin. It typically runs 20 to 30 per cent of yarn price and rises with count.
Does blend ratio change conversion cost?
Yes. Polyester-rich blends generally spin more easily and cheaply than cotton-rich ones at the same count.
Can you give a firm blend price?
Yes. Send the ratio, count, spin type and quantity and we will quote firm, current pricing ex-Delhi.
