Garment Yarn Requirement Calculator

Estimate the yarn needed for a garment order from pieces and grams per piece.

Yarn (kg) = pieces × grams per piece ÷ 1000, plus wastage. Grams per piece ≈ garment weight for knits; add trims/seam allowance as needed.

From garment to yarn

Costing a garment programme means going backwards: garment weight, times units, plus waste. The garment weight itself depends on fabric GSM, the pattern area and the size mix you are actually producing.

Most costing errors come from using a single average size. If your mix skews to L and XL, average garment weight can be 15 per cent above the medium you priced on.

Typical garment weights

These are finished garment weights. Yarn requirement is higher — add cutting waste and process loss on top.

Premium T-shirt200 GSM jersey200 – 230 g
Polo shirt220 GSM pique240 – 270 g

Worked example

An order of 10,000 basic T-shirts at 170 g average garment weight needs 1,700 kg of finished fabric. Adding 12 per cent cutting waste gives 1,904 kg, and a further 5 per cent process loss gives about 2,000 kg of yarn.

That works out at roughly 200 grams of yarn per shirt — a useful sanity check on any costing.

Frequently asked questions

How much yarn is needed for one T-shirt?

Roughly 200 to 250 grams of yarn per adult T-shirt including cutting and process waste. Finished garment weight is lower, around 160 to 180 grams.

How do I calculate yarn for a garment order?

Multiply average garment weight by units, then add cutting waste (8 to 15 per cent) and process loss (3 to 6 per cent).

Does size mix change yarn requirement?

Significantly. An order skewed to larger sizes can need 10 to 15 per cent more yarn than a costing based on medium alone.

How much yarn for a sweatshirt?

A 300 GSM fleece sweatshirt weighs roughly 450 to 520 grams finished, so allow around 600 grams of yarn per piece.

Can you quote yarn for a full garment programme?

Yes. Send the garment type, fabric GSM, unit count and size mix and we will work back to the yarn quantity and quote it.
