Ends per inch (EPI) counts warp threads across an inch. Picks per inch (PPI) counts weft threads down an inch. Together with the yarn counts they define the construction, usually written as something like 40s × 40s / 120 × 60.
Thread count, the number quoted on bedsheets, is simply EPI plus PPI. A 200 thread count sheet might be 110 ends and 90 picks.

Why the warp/weft balance matters
A fabric with far more ends than picks is warp-faced: it looks and wears like the warp yarn, drapes along the length and resists tearing across the width. Poplin is the classic example at roughly 2:1.
Balanced constructions, where EPI and PPI are close, give even appearance and handle in both directions — cambric and most sheeting sit here. Choosing the balance is a design decision, not just a cost one.

What is EPI and PPI in fabric?
EPI is ends per inch, the number of warp threads across one inch. PPI is picks per inch, the number of weft threads down one inch.
How do I calculate thread count?
Add EPI and PPI. A fabric with 110 ends and 90 picks has a thread count of 200.
What is a good thread count for bedsheets?
Between 200 and 400 covers most quality bedding. Figures far above 400 usually rely on multi-ply yarn counted more than once.
Why do shirtings have more ends than picks?
Warp-faced constructions like poplin put more yarn in the warp for a smoother face, better drape along the length and higher tear strength.
