India’s 2025-26 cotton crop was 290.91 lakh bales (4.95 million tonnes) provisional, against domestic consumption of 328 lakh bales. One bale is 170 kg, so a 50-tonne yarn programme is roughly 294 bales of lint before spinning losses (PIB, July 2026).
The Cotton Corporation of India procured 105.09 lakh bales worth ₹41,530 crore under MSP operations in cotton season 2025-26, through 24 lakh transactions across 571 procurement centres in 152 districts and 11 states. When CCI is buying heavily, open-market lint tightens — which is exactly when a committed programme is worth more than spot buying (PIB, July 2026).
