GSM — grams per square metre — is the standard measure of fabric weight. It is one of the most important numbers to get right when ordering fabric.
What GSM means
GSM is simply how much one square metre of the fabric weighs in grams. A higher GSM means a heavier, denser fabric; a lower GSM means a lighter one.
Typical GSM ranges
- Lightweight (around 100–150 GSM) — fine shirting, summer tees
- Mid-weight (around 150–250 GSM) — most T-shirts and polos
- Heavyweight (250 GSM and up) — sweatshirts, fleece, denim, home textiles
Why GSM matters
GSM affects the look, feel, durability, drape and cost of a fabric. Two fabrics in the same construction can feel completely different at different GSMs, so it should always be part of your spec.
What to specify alongside GSM
Construction, fibre/blend, width and finish — together with GSM — define the fabric precisely.
