Yarn for Denim: Choosing Warp and Weft

18 June 2026 by

Denim has specific yarn needs for warp and weft. Getting them right affects strength, look and cost.

Warp yarn

The warp (lengthwise) yarn in denim is traditionally indigo-dyed and needs good strength to withstand weaving tension. Ring-spun warp gives a more authentic, textured look; open-end warp is more economical and uniform.

Weft yarn

The weft (crosswise) yarn is usually undyed (greige) and often open-end for cost-efficiency, in coarser counts.

Typical counts

Denim commonly uses coarser counts (around 6s to 16s for warp and weft) — heavier for rigid denim, finer for lighter weights.

Ring-spun vs open-end for denim

  • Ring-spun — premium, textured, authentic look; higher cost.
  • Open-end — uniform, economical, great for mainstream denim.

What to specify

Share warp and weft counts, spinning method, and whether the warp is to be dyed.
