Denim has specific yarn needs for warp and weft. Getting them right affects strength, look and cost.
Warp yarn
The warp (lengthwise) yarn in denim is traditionally indigo-dyed and needs good strength to withstand weaving tension. Ring-spun warp gives a more authentic, textured look; open-end warp is more economical and uniform.
Weft yarn
The weft (crosswise) yarn is usually undyed (greige) and often open-end for cost-efficiency, in coarser counts.
Typical counts
Denim commonly uses coarser counts (around 6s to 16s for warp and weft) — heavier for rigid denim, finer for lighter weights.
Ring-spun vs open-end for denim
- Ring-spun — premium, textured, authentic look; higher cost.
- Open-end — uniform, economical, great for mainstream denim.
