Effect yarns turn plain fabric into something with character. Three you will meet most are melange, grindle and slub — here is how they differ.
Melange
Melange blends fibres of different shades before spinning for a soft, heathered, multi-tone look — think marl t-shirts and sweatshirts.
Grindle
Grindle twists together strands of different shades, giving a more defined, salt-and-pepper multi-colour effect for casualwear and textured knits.
Slub
Slub yarn has deliberate thick-and-thin places along its length for a textured, casual surface — popular in fashion wovens and knits.
Choosing an effect
- Soft heather look — melange.
- Defined multi-tone — grindle.
- Textured surface — slub.
All three can be supplied in cotton and blends, and dyed for further colour effects.
