Choosing Yarn for Baby and Infant Wear

13 July 2026 by

Babywear asks more of a yarn than almost any other product: it must be soft, gentle and clean. Here is what to look for.

Softness first

Choose fine, combed cotton or soft cellulosics like bamboo and modal for a gentle hand against delicate skin. Avoid coarse, hairy yarn.

Clean and low-nep

Combed yarn’s low nep and contaminant levels matter more here than anywhere — specks and rough spots are unacceptable in babywear.

Gentle, consistent colour

For coloured babywear, consistent, well-fixed shades matter. Many brands prefer organic cotton for sensitive-skin and eco positioning.

Typical choices

Soft single-jersey and interlock knits in combed cotton, bamboo or modal, in the 24s–40s range. See knitting yarn and sustainable options.
