Bedsheet quality is a story of two numbers — yarn count and thread count. Here is how they work together.
Yarn count
Finer yarn (higher Ne) makes lighter, smoother, more luxurious sheeting. Percale and sateen sheets typically use combed cotton in the 30s–60s. See yarn for home textiles.
Thread count
Thread count is the ends plus picks per inch (EPI + PPI). Higher thread counts — within reason — give a denser, smoother sheet, but need finer yarn to avoid a heavy, stiff fabric. Use the ends & picks calculator.
Getting the balance right
Very high thread counts only help with genuinely fine yarn; otherwise they add weight without quality. Match count to your target thread count and GSM — check with the GSM chart and reed calculator.
