The single biggest factor in yarn quality is the fibre it starts from. Understanding cotton staple length and grade helps you set realistic expectations for count, strength and price.
Staple length
Staple length is the average length of the cotton fibres. Longer staple spins into finer, stronger, smoother yarn:
| Staple | Character | Typical counts |
|---|---|---|
| Short | Coarser, economical | up to ~20s |
| Medium | All-round | 20s–40s |
| Long / extra-long | Fine, strong, smooth | 40s–100s+ |
Grade and cleanliness
Beyond length, cotton is graded on colour, trash content and neps. Cleaner, whiter cotton with fewer contaminants yields cleaner yarn and fabric — part of why combed cotton (which removes short fibres and trash) posts better strength and evenness.
What it means for your order
If you need a fine count or premium hand, expect longer-staple cotton and a higher price; for robust, everyday fabric, medium or short staple is more economical. We match the right fibre to your fabric and hold it consistent — see our quality standards.
