A sample is only useful if you test it properly and the bulk matches it. Follow these steps so the lot you receive is the lot you approved.
Before the sample arrives
- Write the specification. Count, blend, spin, twist, packing and any quality figures you expect.
- Ask what the sample represents. It should come from the same source and quality as the bulk.
What to check on the sample
- Count and evenness. Check count and variation against the specification.
- Strength and hairiness. These affect knitting and weaving performance.
- Hand-feel and appearance. Look for neps, contamination and uneven shade.
- A small trial. Knit or weave a short length and check how it runs and finishes.
- Shade, if dyed. Compare under a standard light source against your reference.
Locking in the approval
- Keep a retained sample. Seal and label it, and keep it for comparison.
- Put it in writing. Note the approved specification and tolerances on the purchase order.
- Compare the first bulk lot. Check it against the retained sample before using it in volume.
