What Is Twist Multiplier and How to Choose It

6 July 2026 by

Two yarns of the same count can feel and perform very differently depending on how much twist they carry. The dial that controls this is the twist multiplier. Here is what it means and how to choose it.

How twist and count relate

Twist is measured in turns per inch (TPI). But the ideal TPI depends on the yarn’s fineness, so spinners use a count-independent figure — the twist multiplier (TM):

  • TPI = TM × √count (Ne)

So a finer yarn needs more turns per inch for the same “feel” of twist. Work out TPI and TPM for any count with our Twist Calculator.

Typical twist multipliers

UseTypical TM
Hosiery / soft knits2.5–3.5
Weft yarn3.0–3.5
Warp yarn4.0–4.5
Voile / crepe (hard twist)4.5+

How twist affects the yarn

More twist raises strength up to a point, then reduces it if over-twisted. Higher twist gives a harder, leaner, stronger yarn (good for warp and crepe); lower twist gives a softer, fuller, more absorbent yarn (good for hosiery and towels). Read more in our guide to yarn twist (TPI).
