Knitting and weaving place very different demands on yarn. Using the wrong type causes breakages, uneven fabric and rejections. This guide explains what each process needs, so you can specify the right yarn.
What knitting needs
Knitting loops yarn continuously, so it needs soft, even, extensible yarn with moderate twist that bends without breaking. Too much twist causes spirality and a harsh hand. Hosiery and knitting yarns are engineered for this — smooth, low-friction and flexible.
What weaving needs
Weaving interlaces warp and weft under tension, so warp yarn especially must be strong and abrasion-resistant, usually with higher twist and often sized for the loom. Weft can be softer. Strength and consistency matter most, because a warp break stops the loom.
