Thread count is simply ends per inch plus picks per inch — the total number of threads in a square inch of fabric. A 110 × 90 construction gives a thread count of 200.
It is a useful shorthand for density, and a poor proxy for quality. A 200-count sheet in long-staple combed cotton will outlast and out-feel a 400-count sheet in short-staple carded yarn every time.
How the number gets inflated
The multi-ply trick is the reason 1000-count sheets exist. If a fabric is woven with two-ply yarn, some sellers count each ply as a separate thread, doubling the stated figure without adding a single thread to the cloth.
A genuine single-ply 1000 thread count is close to physically impossible in cotton — the yarn would have to be so fine that the fabric would be too fragile to use. Anything above roughly 600 deserves a question about ply.

What thread count suits what

What to specify instead
If you are buying bed linen, thread count alone is the weakest specification you can write. Specify the yarn count, the staple length, whether the cotton is combed, and the weave — percale or sateen.
A spec reading “40s combed cotton, percale, 200 TC single ply” tells a mill exactly what to make. “400 TC” on its own tells them nothing useful and invites the cheapest interpretation.

Is a higher thread count better?
